Gasoline Demand Is At An 18 Month High

The Business Insider -- Maybe all the talk about peak gasoline is bunk. With the price of gas low, and peak driving season upon us, Mastercard reports that U.S. gasoline consumption was the highest it's been in a year and a half:

Bloomberg: Motorists bought an average 9.695 million barrels of gasoline a day in the week ended June 26, MasterCard, the second-biggest credit-card company, said in its weekly SpendingPulse report. That’s 1.6 percent above a year earlier and the most since the week ended Dec. 21, 2007.

Gas demand in the Northwest U.S. is the lowest its been since the late 1960s!

The point of reference is a Mastercard statement that more people are CHARGING for gas...

Truth is, demand is down. Less people have CASH at the gas station.

funny, business insider says "demand at a high" and other articles posted on this forum say "demand hits low points". Hmmm....

The price of gas maybe down, but the number of unemployed are still going up. That ccold produce a worry for some, as well as having more people go out to look for new employers.

The price maybe down now, but it won't stay down for too long.

With the economy down ... more people are using their credit cards, instead of cash ... gas prices are still rising over here

Probably all the people out looking for jobs, and charging the gas because they do not have cash left to pay for it.

Maybe MasterCard's sales are higher for gasoline because people are using their credit cards more to purchase things since they don't have the cash. Sounds like incomplete data to me.

With all the contradiction about gas supplies vs demand it seems stories are made up just to suit the current feeling of the news media.

The news media speaks with a forked tongue(but that's nothing new) I just heard a report that people are traveling much less this year than last, even with the lower gas prices this year. It would seem the recession is keeping people home, whom might otherwise travel this holiday week-end. The report said that was the reason prices are at least staying steady or even dropping a little, because demand is down. What report does one believe?

We must keep conserving -- reduce driving, stay home instead of taking a vacation (if you can afford one) and combine trips. No joy riding at all.

Yes but 18 months ago we were in the depths of a serious oil speculation that had gas at all time highs, in the middle of an economic depression and W was still lost.

Now things are just a little bit better.

Why is this surprising? Gas is relatively cheap and this is the time of year that many of us take to the roads. They are reporting an increase of only 1.6% over last year when prices were much higher.

Sounds to me like they are trying to justify the price of gas? I don't know anyone who is driving as much as they use to

"with the price of gas low". Who really feels that the price is low? This author must not have been around in the 60s or 70s.

Hard to believe it's back up there that high considering I see less cars on the road these days around here. Fewer people driving because of no job, not enough money, etc. Makes me wonder if they're just faking the numbers now.

You're right on the money Jeepp! Granma3xnow, they can get the mileage of your vehicle up more too! Others are doing it. Glad they fixed it for you.

A relative fixed the fuel problem on my car and now I get about 27-29 mpg. I am NOT buying more gas this year, I am buying LESS. (but now my car won't qualify for $$ for clunkers)

It's not that we are buying more gas. It's we are charging more gas because we can afford to pay for it. And that is very bad. What a poorly conceive article.

Maybe people who used to pay cash for gas don't have any cash, so they are charging their gas on credit cards that they will not be able to pay because they don't have jobs.
